Hafsah bint Umar رضي الله عنها
Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنه was the daughter of Hadhrat Umar bin Al Khattab رضي الله عنه. She was born in Makkah five years before Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم announced his call. She was first married to Khunays bin Hudhafaah رضي الله عنه, who was one of the very first Muslims who had immigrated to Abyssinia and then to Madinah. Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها had also immigrated to Madinah with her husband. He participated in the battle of Badr and was fatally wounded either during the battler of Badr or the Battle of Uhud , after which he passed away in the 1st or 2nd year after the Hijrah.
When Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها was widowed, her father Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه approached Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and said, “I want to give Hafsah in marriage to you." Hadhrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said nothing. Thereafter, Hadhrat Uthmaan رضي الله عنه lost his wife Hadhrat Ruqayya رضي الله عنها, who was the daughter of Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم. Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه therefore approached Hadhrat Uthmaan رضي الله عنه with the same offer to marry Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها. In response, Hadhrat Uthmaan رضي الله عنه replied, “I do not intend to marry just yet.”
When Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه mentioned this to Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم, he said, “I know of a husband for Hafsah who is better than Uthmaan and of a wife for Uthmaan who is better than Hafsah.”
Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم then took Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها as his wife and gave his own daughter Hadhrat Umme Kulthoom رضي الله عنها in marriage to Hadhrat Uthmaan رضي الله عنه.
Hadhrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه later said to Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه “When you offered Hafsah's hand to me in marriage, I kept quiet because Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم had expressed to me his intention to marry her. Since I could neither accept your offer nor disclose Rasoolullah's صلى الله على وسلم secret to you, I therefore remained silent. Had Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم changed his mind, I would have gladly married her.”
Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه says, “ Abu Bakr's silence over the offer was more hurtful than Uthmaan's rejection"
Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها was a very pious and abstinent women who spent most of her nights in Salaah and who fasted very often. Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم once became displeased with Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها on some account and even pronounced the first divorce. This grieved Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه very much. However, Hadhrat Jibra'eel علي السلامهcame to Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم and sais “Allah wants you to take Hafsah back because she spends her nights in Salaah and fasts very often. Allah Ta'aala also wants it for Umars sake.” Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم therefore took her back in his marriage.
Hadhrat Hafsah رضي الله عنها passed away in Madinah during the month of Jumaadul Ula in the year 45 A.H.
She was 63 at the time. Some historians have stated that she passed away in the year 41 A.H. at the age of 60.
