Ummu Hakeem رضي الله عنها Accepts Islam and participates in Jihad

Hadhrat Ummu Hakeem رضي الله عنها was the wife of Ikramah bin Abi Jahal رضي الله عنه. She participated on the side of the Kuffar in the battle of Uhud and embraced Islam when the Muslims conquered Makkah. However, her husband refused to become Muslim because his father Abu Jahal was the worst enemy of Islam. Therefore, when the Muslims conquered Makkah, her husband fled to Yemen. Because she loved her husband very much, she secured pardon for him from Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم and followed him to Yemen, where after much persuasion she managed to convince him to return home. She said to him, “You will find safety from the sword of Muhammed صلى الله على وسلم only in his lap.” He then returned with her to Madinah, where he embraced Islam. The couple then began to live happily together.

Both husband and wife participated in the wars against the Byzantines during the Khilaafah of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and it was during one of theses battles that Hadhrat Ikramah رضي الله عنه was martyred. Ummu Hakeem رضي الله عنها was then married to Hadhrat Khaalid bin Sa'eed رضي الله عنه. When her new husband expressed the wish to meet her at a place called Marj-us-Safr, she said, “But the enemy are concentrating on all fronts. Let us first do away with them.” However, he replied, “ I am certain that I shall not survive this battle.” The couple then shared the bed for the first time in a tent. Waleemah arrangements were still being made the following morning when they Byzantines launched a fierce attack. A fiery battle raged and Hadhrat Khaalid bin Sa'eed رضي الله عنه was martyred as he fought. Hadhrat Ummu Hakeem رضي الله عنها packed up her tent and her luggage, took a tent peg in her hand, and fought the enemy until she killed seven of them.

NOTE: Under such circumstances, no man of our times, let alone women, would be prepared to get married. Even if someone did get married in such circumstances, the sudden death of her groom will be enough to make her weep endlessly and mourn for a long time. However, this servant of Allah Ta'aala engages the enemy in battle and even kills seven enemy soldiers singlehandedly.
