Ummu Sulaym رضي الله عنها loses her child.

Hadhrat Ummu Sulaym رضي الله عنها was the mother of Hadhrat Anas رضي الله عنه who remained a widow for some time after the death of her husband in order to devote herself to caring for her son. Later on, she was married to Abu Talha رضي الله عنه and bore a son named Abu Umayr from him. Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم often visited her house to play with the child.

One day, Abu Umayr fell seriously ill. Hadhrat Abu Talha رضي الله عنه was still at work when the child suddenly passed away. Ummu Sulaym رضي الله عنها washed the dead body, shrouded it and then gently placed it on the bed.

Abu Talha رضي الله عنه was fasting that day and, before her returned, she had his meal prepared and had also adorned herself to meet him. When he returned and asked about the child, she replied, “He is at peace.” Satisfied that the child was all right, Abu Talha رضي الله عنه then shared the bed with his wife.

When the couple awoke the following morning, Hadhrat Ummu Sulaym رضي الله عنها asked him, “ I need to ask you something. If someone entrusts another person with something and then asks for it back, should the person deliver the item upon demand?” “Of course.” Abu Talha رضي الله عنه replied, 'He is obliged to return the item and has no right to hold it Back.” To this, Ummu Sulaym رضي الله عنها explained, “ Your son whom Allah Ta'aala entrusted us has been reclaimed by Allah.”

Filled with grief, he asked, “ Why did you not inform me earlier?” he then went to Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم an narrated the story to him. Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم prayed for him and said, “Allah Ta'aala is likely to bless your union last night.”

A Sahabi from the Ansaar says, “I saw the effect of Rasoolullah صلى الله على وسلم du'aa. As a result of the couples union that night, Abu Talha رضي الله عنه got a son named Abdullah. Abdullah then had nine sons all of whom were proficient in the knowledge of the Quraan.”

NOTE: It needs much courage and patience to bear the death of a child in a manner that even the Husband does not sense anything. Ummu Sulaym did not inform her husband of the death because he was fasting and she feared that he would be unable to eat and rest once he received the news.
